Burpees? No thanks! Round 1 just ended for the CrossFit Open. The WOD? Burpees - AMRAP in 7 minutes. Now if you are a CrossFitter you know that these suck. I do everything in my power to do as few burpees as possible.
Ben and I go to CrossFit at 6AM on Tuesdays. Our gym penalizes anyone who is late by making them do 5 burpees/minute you are late. Ben is impossible to wake up in the mornings, but on Tuesdays he knows he better get out of bed and be in the car at 5:50AM or else I will leave him. I'll be in the kitchen downing my mini protein shake calling out the time like a drill sergeant.
Our box has been buzzing all week with talks of how many burpees people are doing. I think the highest in Houston was 161 or 163. That's a hella lot of burpees. Do the math - it's about 23 per minute. Seems doable, but check the numbers.

Ben decided not to compete this year (he's really competitive, and only wants to compete when he knows he is in phenomenal shape), and he decided not to even try the challenge... well so he said. As soon as everyone finished posting numbers, his competitive edge got the best of him. We were sitting at home and he decides he wants to go outside and do burpees. It's dusk and everyone in our apartment is out walking their kids and dogs. Ben is trying to find the least muddy (and dog poopless) patch of grass, and I have a timer in one hand, a camera in the other. He took off at a really quick pace - about 50 in 2 minutes. The mud, passerbyers, and humidity then start to get to him, so he starts to step out of every burpee, which slows you down quite a bit. I count outloud and encourage however I can (burpee cheerleader!). He gets 105!
I travel alot for work and I spend a good amount of time in San Antonio. I haven't attended a box there yet, but there is one that seems pretty impressive. They had a great burpee blog with wonderful tips. So, if you get the urge to crank out some burpees, read this first!

He's not thrilled, and naturally thinks he could've done more. I am just exhausted from watching. Way to go! Now on to the next round... snatches. 3 sets of 30 at increasing weights in under 10 minutes.
